More than 15,000 underprivileged and special needs children in Florida have enjoyed a summer camp experience thanks to LIFE’s Summer Camp Program, administered by the Palm Beach County Community Action Program.
For more than a decade, Mrs. Pope and the Lois Pope LIFE Foundation awarded annual $25,000 Unsung Hero scholarships to four academically deserving, community service-oriented and financially needy students who were attending the Sophie Davis School of Medicine at the City College, City University of New York.
Mrs. Pope and the Lois Pope LIFE Foundation donated funds to build a residence hall on the Ross campus of Cedars of Marin, a program for developmentally disabled adults.
From 1996-2000 LIFE awarded $580,000 in Unsung Hero Scholarships to Palm Beach County students with outstanding records in community service. Each scholarship was in the amount of $10,000 and assisted the students in purchasing college tuition and books.
The village of El Triunfo in Guatemala received a new clean water system after it was devastated by Hurricane Mich. The system came from a $100,000 donation from the Lois Pope LIFE Foundation, working with the Center for Environmental Studies at Florida Atlantic University.
The Community of Sudanese American Women/Men, which organized the Sudan Genocide Response Team, received a $250,000 grant from the Lois Pope LIFE Foundation to help young refugee women who were displaced by the war in Sudan. The grant allowed the recipients to migrate to America to find new lives in a free society.
The Lois Pope LIFE Center, home of the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, is the top catastrophic neurological research facility in the world. Here, researchers, doctors and others are using cutting-edge medicine, state-of-the-art techniques, and best-in-class services to help those suffering from spinal cord injuries. It was established through a $10 million gift from Mrs. Pope.
