Thanks to Lois Pope and the American Humane, dogs, cats and other animals in need of emergency rescue, medical treatment and shelter services in times of disaster and abuse now have hope. The 50-foot-long Lois Pope Red Star Rescue Vehicles are manned by specially trained responders and carry supplies and equipment to shelter up to 100 animals. The vehicles are also used as mobile sites for humane education programs and animal cruelty interventions.
Through the support of Mrs. Pope and LIFE for AH’s initiative to Help Bring All Heroes Home, dogs who served alongside military personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan are being reunited with their brave human handlers back in the U.S.
Mrs. Pope sponsors the Annual Hero Dog Awards. This Oscars-like program under the aegis of the American Humane salutes canines from across the country who are doing extraordinary work in eight categories: Military, Service, Therapy, Arson, Search and Rescue, Law Enforcement, Guide & Hearing, and Emerging Hero.
